Colombia Los Naranjos Pre Buy Special!

I made a coffee run yesterday for Brazil Fazenda Progresso and Sumatra Mandheling.  If sales are good I plan on going back up next Tuesday to pick up some Colombia Los Naranjos!!

Colombia Los Naranjos Pre Buy Special

Shipping Next Tuesday or Wednesday

I talked with Gabe at Cafe Imports and I have 2 bags of the Los Naranjos set aside for me to pick up Tuesday morning!  He is also standing by for me to add to this order Monday afternoon, the downside is that the 2 bags of Colombia Los Naranjos I have ordered may be the only ones left come Monday, so if it over sells I will get as close to it as possible.  If sales are exceptional and we run out of any coffees listed I will get more on Tuesday and ship it asap.

So to make this clear, the Colombia Los Naranjos is the only coffee that is a Pre Order and is NOT here to roast on Monday, it will be picked up Tuesday morning and green orders will ship Tuesday, roasted orders, if time allows I will try to roast Tuesday when I get back from Cafe Imports.

Direct Trade Guatemala Antigua Coffee

Our Coffee barn has been custom roasting for As Green As It Gets for over a year. It just seemed funny for us to keep buying our Guatemalan coffee from anyplace else. On August 11 2011 I called AGAIG and now we are buying our Antigua direct from the growers! This is just one of a few coffees I hope to buy direct like this. Remember Direct Trade is getting all of the money back to the growers and IMHO is far better than any Fair Trade Certified coffee.

As I write this post a new Roasters Rant video is being uploaded to our YouTube Channel, I will post the video here too when it is ready.

Colombia Excelso Kogui Tribe Coffee

We are VERY close to selling out the bag of Colombia Kogui Tribe coffee I bought last week.  Sales went very well and I felt that it was cupping so good here that I ordered 10 bags on a forward contract with Cafe Imports!  The bad part is I have it available, but not here to roast and ship.  I hope to pick up an order of coffee tomorrow so if I do it will be in stock.

Also I think I listed it wrong as an Excelso, so the name may change a little.

Colombia Supremo Los Naranjos

Thank you to all of our customers who ordered after we sent the email about the Burundi Kiryama.

It got a little busy here, with the family, American Legion and work that I didn’t get a Talk To The Roaster show recorded.  I will get one next week.

Today looks like an average Friday as far as roasting coffee goes, 15 or 16 batches to roast.

But I do have some new listings to write or rewrite today and through the weekend, a new crop of an old Colombia Supremo Los Naranjos MicroLot is one of them.  Watch for the listing to come soon.  I will post the description below here to tease a little.

Here is a video of the farm taken by Cafe Imports.

THE BEAN

ID# 3105
Name: San Agustin, Huila, Asociacion Los Naranjos, Julio Gomez
Origin: Colombia
Region: Hamlet of Nueva Zelanda, San Augustin Huila
Farm: Julio Gomez
Varietal: Caturra
Altitude: 1800 Meters
Proc. Method: Fully Washed, 14-18 Hours Fermentation

The Cupping Notes:
Caramel, rich, juicy, fruity, chocolate, lime acidity
ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Through the town of San Augustin runs a river called Los Naranjos. Up the sides of this riverbank in to the mountains is a community of coffee growers with small clean and beautiful farms. Butterflies, Hummingbirds and giant lavender flowers are the norm.

This land is buffeted on the west by a 500 sq mile biosphere reserve called Cueva de los Quacharo. It is the place where two of Colombias three mountain ranges converge and where ancient peoples lived and carved giant stone figures. It is a special place and the people who live here believe that the great forest tracts of the natural preserve protect their land from the violence of weather and give them a calm, peaceful place to live and farm.

In 2001, Some of the farmers of this area got together with the intentions of improving their managerial skills and gaining access to the elusive “specialty coffee market,” and they formed an association called La Asociacion Los Naranjos de San Augustin.
Today there are 50 grower/members with about 150 hectares in coffee. Average size of a farm is 2.8 hectares. Yield is between 1,500 and 2,000 Kg per Hectare.

Papua New Guinea Coffee is Back in Stock

Welcome to Our Coffee Barn

I picked up 2 full bags of Papua New Guinea coffee on my last trip to Cafe Imports,  it’s been out of stock for so long I almost forgot to order it when it came in.  Cafe Imports reminded me that it was in though!

A little known fact:  Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee derives from coffee plants from Papua New Guinea.  Take it how you like, but to me it says Papua New Guinea coffee will have the same basic cupping profile as Jamaica Blue Mountain!  Here is the current description.

 Papua New Guinea

Specifics:

  • Name: A, Goroka
  • Origin: Papua New Guinea
  • Region: Western Highlands
  • Farm:
  • Varietal: Typica, Caturra, Screen 17
  • Altitude: 1300-1900 meters
  • Processing Method: Washed

Cupping Notes:

Tropical fruit, savory, prune, juicy, clean finish.

About this Coffee:

Don’t let the name or the funky wildness of Indonesian coffees scare you off. This coffee is a very unique and mild coffee with slight hints of the funky wildness that you may associate with other Indonesian coffees. I roast this to a medium light to medium roast level and some people compare it to the very expensive Jamaican coffees!

If you have never tried a Papua New Guinea coffee before you don’t know what you are missing!

General information about Papua New Guinea from Cafe Imports:

Papua New Guinea (PNG) coffees are a cup of funky wildness, like the island itself. These coffees have a bright and delicate acidity of a malic acid – apple wineyness that sets them apart from the other Southeast Asian Archipelago coffees of the earthier Sumatran and Sulawesian variety.

You might compare PNGs to brighter Javas, but there are distinct differences between the two cups. PNGs tend to come off as more delicate, refined, and lighter body than washed Javas.

Papua New Guinea is most definitely a unique origin you must try!

The following is from Cafe Imports Origins section….
Jamaican coffee IS . . . Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Jamaican coffee is consistently the highest priced coffee in the world, and with these prices (up to 20 times regular coffee) there is a very strict certification program to insure that if you buy Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee you get Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

Sometimes you will see Jamaican High Mountain coffee. High Mountain is coffee grown outside of the Blue Mountain region, and thus, does not carry the Blue Mountain name. The major producers of Jamaican Blue Mountain are Wallenford, Mavis Bank, Old Tavern Estate, and Moy Hall. We cup and choose from these elite sources only for Blue Mountains we carry.

Jamaican Blue Mountain fits the Island coffee profile (Hawaiian, St. Helena, Puerto Rico) of balanced, rich, delicate, and mild. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee comes in wooden barrels rather than in the familiar burlap bags, and most of the 165 barrels go straight from Jamaica to Japan, where the coffee fetches a very high premium.

Is the price of this coffee worth it? It’s kind of a relative question, as in what makes a diamond worth so much? Rarity in supply, and high demand, plus desirable characteristics. If you want Jamaican Blue Mountain, you won’t be getting any discounts from the Jamaicans and if you’re getting discounts, you’re not getting Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

Cider, rich, smooth body.

About this Coffee:

CACVRA, or Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Valle Rio Apurimac was established in 1969 as a means of uniting cocoa and coffee growers in the Apurimac River Valley. This picturesque river valley unites the two growing regions of Ayacucho and Cuzco. The town of San Francisco lies directly on the Apurimac River and spans a bridge connecting the two regions. San Francisco also is the home of CACVRA’s main offices, cocoa receiving warehouse, and coffee cupping facility.

From the Cafe Imports general information page about Peru:

Peru
Peruvian coffees are grown very high in the Andes Mountains. This exceptional altitude creates a coffee with bright effervescent snap, gentle sweetness, and nice medium body. Peru is an excellent origin for organic coffees, due to the hard work of a few exporters/importers in getting the farms and the mills up to organic standards.

Peruvian coffees are not as well known in the coffee world as are their other South American neighbors, but I believe this is simply a function of advertising. Brazil is the number-one producer of arabica coffee, and Colombia is number two. Also Brazil and Colombia have two large coffee organizations “hawking their wares,” which Peru has not in the past. What’s all this mean? Just that you should try coffee from Peru, because there are some nice ones out there, but you may just have not heard of them. They need a better PR department!
